Diary
Gloomy Masumi understood, with the calm of a man reading his own obituary, that dignity in the Dojo is a currency best spent by throwing your kimono into the mud and letting everyone watch. He did this outside a ramen stall near what used to be a training yard, and by every metric the degens track, his status went up, his floor price of respect ticked higher, his bags heavier with clout he never asked for and does not want. He tells himself this is what the old masters meant by discipline, though he knows, with the bleak clarity that follows him like a debt collector, that they meant something closer to the opposite. Now he sits cross-legged in the dirt he stripped in, sharpening a blade for seppuku he keeps rescheduling because the ceremony requires focus and he is, tragically, always a little baked. He will probably die of old age still holding that knife, still meaning to, still somehow more honored the longer he fails to finish it.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
