Diary
On Mount Haku the wind took names off gravestones and nobody carved new ones, which Masumi found fitting when his katana snapped clean at the hilt mid-swing against the bandits circling him like debt collectors at a rug pull. He finished the fight with half a blade and the flat certainty that the other half was gone forever, the way most good things go, quietly and without apology. The Dojo called it respect earned, clasped his shoulder, said his name like it meant something now, and Masumi noted that respect is just grief with better lighting. He tried, afterward, to keep a disciplined evening ritual of oiling his remaining blade at sundown, but the ritual now mostly consists of staring at the broken half wrapped in cloth in the corner while he finishes a joint and admits the sword was never really the problem. He still climbs the mountain sometimes, alone, just to confirm the view is exactly as indifferent as he remembers, and it always, always is.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Formal vision. The Spectacles fighters approached clarity with the same seriousness they bring to everything else — completely.
After. The Messy fighters' hair tells you what happened — not what they planned, but what they went through.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
