Diary
Masumi disrobed slowly, methodically, while The Degen Scholar tried to explain candlestick patterns on the tatami mats, and by the third garment nobody was pretending this was about ventilation anymore. He wasn't making a statement, he insisted, he was simply removing the layers between himself and the truth, which is that all portfolios end in ash and all robes end on the floor. The Scholar kept talking charts; Masumi kept nodding, kept undressing, kept arriving at the same flat conclusion he arrives at with everything, that it will not work out and at least now he is comfortable knowing it. He tried, afterward, to fold the robes back into their proper stack, the way his old sensei taught him, corners meeting corners, and got exactly as far as he gets with discipline these days, which is one fold before giving up and leaving them in a heap that looks like a small defeated ghost. Now he says he wants a quieter life, a hut, silence, maybe a stream, and everyone believes him the way you believe a man who says he's quitting weed while holding a fresh gram, because Masumi has never once in his life gotten the quiet thing right, and somehow already seems to know that too.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Traditional footwear made into a statement. The Strap On Geta fighters move in a way that makes noise — deliberate, rhythmic, impossible to miss.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
