Masumi once wore his discipline like armor, each breath measured, each strike a small honest truth; now he sits in the sake house counting the truths he can no longer afford. He watched his savings evaporate hand by hand, the dealer's smile widening with each of his losses, and somewhere between the fourth cup and the fifth he stopped noticing his own earring was gone until his ear felt lighter than his coin purse. He tells himself this was the lesson, that clarity always arrives late and cheap, dressed as a thief's grin instead of a teacher's. He knows better now, he says, the way a man says it after every rug, after every floor that wasn't a floor at all but a trapdoor with sake stains. Somewhere his old sensei is shaking his head, and Masumi agrees with him completely, which changes absolutely nothing about tomorrow night's game.
