Diary
Masumi did not choose the high moon evening in question; the moon chose him, and his bowels agreed to the appointment without consulting him first. He had once trained under masters who spoke of discipline as a blade honed daily, and now he measures discipline in how far he can walk from a ramen stall before his stomach files its complaint. There was no dojo bell that night, only the low groan of a man betrayed by gas-station gyoza and a lifetime of poor decisions, crouched somewhere between shame and the stars. He tells people it built character; the truth, which he prefers, is that it built nothing but a very long memory and a mild distrust of moonlight. He is a true degen, he says flatly, because a true samurai would have at least made it to a proper outhouse, and he did not even try.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
In motion even when still. The Wavy fighters are always already moving — the hair is just the most visible evidence.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
