Diary
Masumi once knelt beneath a high moon, staring at a single blade of grass for so long that the monks called it meditation and he privately called it the longest, dumbest staring contest of his life, and he lost, because the will he was testing turned out to be rented, not owned. He remembers thinking the grass would teach him stillness, the way his old sensei promised discipline was a seed you water with patience, but all he grew that night was a headache and a suspicion that enlightenment was a scam with better lighting. So now he runs a dirty gambling den behind a noodle stall, dealing cards under a single flickering bulb, telling himself it is temporary the same way he told himself the grass thing was going somewhere. Every night some fool loses his whole floor on a bad hand and Masumi watches with the same flat, tired eyes he once gave that blade of grass, because nothing has changed except the stakes and the smell of weed replacing the smell of temple incense. He still tries, every new moon, to quit the den and sit still again for one honest hour, and every new moon he fails a little faster than the last, which he supposes is its own kind of consistency.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
