Junichiro had calculated the encounter down to the angle of his knuckles before he ever set foot near the Kingpin's table, certain that precision alone would separate him from the rabble who wasted their katana-hands on dice and floor-priced nonsense. He had measured the Kingpin's reputation, his tells, even the worn grain of the dojo floorboards, and found himself, as always, the only variable he could not perfectly account for. The strike he threw was textbook, a first son's inheritance of form and fury, except the target moved a half-inch wrong and Junichiro's finger folded backward with a crack that echoed louder than his pride could bear. He stood there cradling the ruined digit, silently re-running the sequence, hunting the exact frame where discipline had slipped into desperation, because surely it was a technical error and not the truth that he'd let ego swing before judgment. He knows better now, he tells himself, tightening the splint each morning with the same exacting care he once gave his blade, still measuring, still failing to admit that some fights were never his to seek.
