Diary
Junichiro had scored the Hidden Teahouse a four out of ten on arrival, docking two points for the goats and one for the ambient smell of weed drifting from the back room, and he liked to say a true swordsman should never grade an establishment below a five before sundown. He aped into the last futon anyway, telling himself this was strategic rest, discipline in disguise, the same discipline his father once demanded of him when the clan still mattered and posture was currency. Sometime past midnight the largest goat rugged him clean off the mat, and Junichiro woke mid-air with the distinct sensation of his elbow negotiating a price it could not afford, the joint folding at an angle no dojo scroll had ever sanctioned. He filed the injury under uninspiring, the same word he used for lazy stances and undercooked rice, and privately marked himself down a full letter grade for failing to secure the perimeter before sleep. Splint on, pride bruised worse than bone, he limped out at dawn already rehearsing the lecture he would give the next fighter who dared call a goat-infested teahouse a place of rest, knowing full well he would probably book the same room again next week.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Organization meets chaos. The Yakuza Hooligan fighters have discipline from one tradition and abandon from another, and they've combined them into something entirely their own.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
