They say Junichiro Reborn died once already, and the man himself never bothers correcting the rumor, since it saves him the trouble of explaining what actually happened at the onsen that afternoon. He had come seeking stillness, the old ritual of steam and silence, a fish cake balanced on his chopsticks like a small offering to whatever god still tolerates him, when his katana, the one relic of his first life, snapped clean in half against the wooden ledge for no reason anyone could name. He laughed the low, unbothered laugh of a man who has already been rugged by fate once and knows there is no floor left to fall through, then finished his snack without ceremony, blade in two pieces beside him like a punchline he wrote himself. Now he claims he wants a quieter life, mornings of meditation, evenings without chaos, a portfolio of calm instead of carnage, but the dojo gossip says he was aped into a sake tournament by sundown and lost his temper along with his winnings. Reborn men still ache for discipline, it seems, they just enjoy narrating the loss of it with a straight face and a steady, unsettling smile.”
