They say Junichiro Reborn died once already, so nothing that happens to his body now really counts, not the ronin blade through the ribs years ago, and certainly not what happened at the onsen when the wild boar came screaming out of the steam. He killed it clean, one motion, the kind of strike that used to make dojo elders weep with pride, except that in the half second after the kill his bowels decided the moment deserved commemoration of their own. He sat there in the mineral water, victorious and disgraced in the same breath, and simply smiled, because a man who has already died once finds it hard to be embarrassed by anything the living do. Now he trains at dawn with the same eerie stillness, telling anyone who'll listen that reputation is just karma with better PR, that he will earn it back one perfect kill at a time, all while quietly, hopelessly failing to convince his own gut to behave under pressure. He calls it his second death and laughs the laugh of a man who has made peace with becoming his own legend, pants and all.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.

He walked into something that should have ended him and walked back out with the same name and none of the same conditions. Nobody agrees what happened out there, and he's in no hurry to explain.
