Before the markets, Masumi Steel kept a code sharp enough to shave with, bowing at dawn, sheathing his blade with two clean hands, the whole disciplined package. Then Haru opened his mouth near the fish stalls in Tsukiji and sold him on a sure-thing token called after a raccoon dog, and honor got quietly rugged somewhere between the tuna auction and the third round of sake. Now Masumi grins like a man who's already lost the bet, needling every stranger into one more hand of cards, one more bluff, one more floor-price prayer whispered to a god who clearly stopped listening. He tells himself tomorrow's the day he meditates at the shrine instead of the pachinko parlor, and everyone within earshot knows that's a lie they'll happily let him keep telling. Nothing left to lose, he says, laughing too loud, looking forward to better days the way a gambler looks forward to the next shuffle.
