Diary
Masumi Steel used to tell himself he'd never be the kind of samurai who traded his honor for a laugh, right up until he sank into the onsen next to The Degen Scholar and let the man start talking about floors and rugs like they were sacred sutras. He meant to stay silent, meant to hold the old discipline like a blade at rest, but three sentences in he was already grinning and asking for the alpha, honor sliding off him like steam off the water. By the time the Scholar finished his pitch, Masumi's dreams had gone technicolor: mansions, endless kegs, a dojo where the only kata is diamond-handing through the dip. He knows it's a bluff, knows he got a little rugged on the spot, but he's grinning anyway because a degen with nothing left to lose just found something new to lose it on. Every morning he swears he'll meditate before he checks the charts, and every morning the charts win, and somehow that losing feels like the closest thing to peace he's got left.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Minimum. Clean. The Fight Gi fighters believe that preparation is visible in the garment — this one says the fighter has done this before.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
