Diary
Masumi Steel used to keep his blade in perfect condition, edge like a promise, ready for anything except, apparently, the Fight Pits' resident courtesans, who peeled his composure apart faster than any rival swordsman ever managed. Knuckles split and grinning like he'd won something, he took their jeers as tribute and their pinches as sparring practice, bluffing his way through the humiliation with a wink and a bloody smile, because what's a little dignity when you've already got none left to lose. He swore, as always, that this time he'd fall back on discipline, breathe, meditate, become the still water his old sensei once described, but instead he bolted straight for the jungle like the vines themselves owed him money. Now he crouches in the leaves, nursing his knuckles and his ego in equal measure, telling the monkeys above that he absolutely could've taken them all if he'd wanted to. The old warrior in him whispers something about honor and restraint, and Masumi, ever the good listener, tells him to pipe down, there's a floor to find and it sure isn't up here in the trees.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wealth made garment. The Money Kimono fighters wear their wins literally — the fabric is a record, not a boast.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Fox face. The Kitsune Mask fighters wear the shapeshifter's face — which means every identity is available to them and none is fixed.
Nothing hidden. No armor above the neck. The Bald fighters face everything without cover and consider this the only honest approach.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
