Diary
Masumi Steel used to be the kind of student who could recite the master's teachings in his sleep, right up until the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, when he decided honor was more of a suggestion than a rule and quietly loosened the ropes on his master's ceremonial float for a laugh that landed somewhere between petty and catastrophic. The lanterns went up, the crowd gasped, and Masumi grinned like a man who'd just aped into a rug pull and called it strategy, betting his whole reputation on nobody looking too closely at the wreckage. Nobody looked away, of course, and now he wanders the docks with that same grin bolted on, cracking jokes about karma and floors dropping out from under a man's life while everyone within earshot politely edges toward the exit. He still tries, bless him, some mornings he even wakes early to meditate, lasts four minutes, then wanders off chasing a dice game or a joint someone's rolling by the harbor, discipline slipping through his fingers like smoke he refuses to actually call weed. Broken, sure, but broken with style, Masumi insists, flashing that same reckless smile that got him here, daring the universe to rug him again just so he can bluff his way through one more round.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Still wearing them. The Bloodied Glasses fighters need nothing to be clean to keep seeing clearly.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
