Diary
Masumi Steel never claimed to be a light sleeper, but even he didn't expect to spit on a man mid-dream and hand him a religion in the process. He and Tokuda had passed out tangled together at the edge of the Fight Pits, floor of the arena serving as their futon, sake serving as their excuse, when some stranger leaned in too close to gawk at the drooling wreckage of two former blades gone soft. One reflexive hock of spit later, the man staggered back like he'd been touched by a monk's blessing instead of a degenerate's phlegm, and by morning word spread that he'd shaved his head and devoted himself to Buddha. Masumi grins about it still, insisting he meant to become a disciplined warrior again someday, right after this nap, right after this bet, right after Tokuda stops using him as a pillow. Enlightenment found someone that night at the Pits, just not the samurai who accidentally handed it out.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No fixed allegiance. The Mercenary fighters fight for whoever offers the right terms and have never lost a battle when those terms were met.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
In motion even when still. The Wavy fighters are always already moving — the hair is just the most visible evidence.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
