Masumi Steel swore the hike up Mount Hotaka would be his reset button, ten thousand feet of clean air to scrub the sake fog off a former blade-swinger who now mostly swings between vibes and vices. Somewhere past the ridgeline Edmundo started talking, really talking, about purpose and legacy and other words Masumi hadn't heard since his sensei was still breathing, and instead of meditating on them Masumi cracked open the flask he swore he left at the ryokan. By the summit he was grinning at the clouds like they owed him money, toasting a future he couldn't quite focus on, insisting to Edmundo that discipline was just a floor price he'd buy back in on tomorrow. He never did climb down sober, and if you ask him he'll tell you the mountain rugged him first, that the view was too good not to drink to, that a real samurai always finds honor in a spectacular, well documented failure. Somewhere in that wobbling descent, staring at Japan going blurry and gold below him, he actually wondered what he was becoming, then laughed it off before the thought could land, because sitting still with a real question is scarier to him than any duel ever was.
