Diary
Masumi Steel used to slice through civilian brawls around the Dojo like a man cutting through a menu he'd already memorized, bored blade, bored footwork, bored little bows at the end. Then a ragtag pack of degens rolled up reeking of weed and bad decisions, cheering him on between bong rips and floor-price arguments, and somehow that was more entertaining than the fights themselves. He kept swinging, kept winning, kept collecting new degen friends like loose change, but he'll tell you straight-faced that the civilians were the real letdown, all that discipline wasted on opponents who couldn't even talk trash properly. Every morning he swears he's cutting back, tightening the katas, finding the old samurai stillness again, and every morning some grinning degen buddy drags him off to gamble his sake money on street fights that don't even have decent stakes. Masumi just shrugs, flashes that reckless grin, and figures discipline's overrated anyway, especially when you've got nothing left to lose and a whole new crew willing to lose it right alongside him.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
