Masumi Steel walked into the shaman's lair looking for a cleanse, a little smoke to clear the static in his skull, and instead found The English Pilot already three cups deep, grinning like he'd found the last airdrop on earth. Masumi told himself one drink wouldn't rug a lifetime of bushido, that a real samurai could sip with a degenerate pilot and still walk out clean, but the shaman's brew had other plans and honor apparently doesn't come with a floor price. By sunrise he was betting his own katana on dice games he didn't understand, laughing too hard at jokes that weren't funny, and swearing to the ancestors he'd stop right after this next round. He still can't forget it, not because it was shameful exactly, but because it was fun, and that's the part that keeps him up some nights, grinning into the dark like an idiot who lost the discipline war and would probably lose it again tomorrow. Every training session since starts with a vow to be better and ends with him needling some poor training partner about how tainted honor tastes suspiciously like victory.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.

They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
