Masumi Steel used to bow to swords; now he just talks smack at them, and the night at the izakaya proved it, when he leaned across a puddle of spilled sake and told a stone-faced samurai his katana looked like it hadn't been unsheathed since the Muromachi period. The room went dead quiet, the kind of quiet where you can hear your own bad decisions catching up to you, but Masumi just grinned wider, chopsticks in hand like a man who'd already priced in getting rugged by a blade. Nothing happened. No steel, no blood, just the samurai's jaw twitching before he necked his drink and walked out, and Masumi Steel felt something crack open in his chest that he can only describe as 'unrekt.' He tried, briefly, to summon the old discipline, straighten his spine, breathe like his sensei once taught him, but the bravado floor was already pumping and he ended up standing on the table instead, toasting himself. Somewhere between the insult and the applause he stopped being a samurai with a code and became a degenerate with a gift, fully unshackled, fully unserious, finally, gloriously free.
