Diary
Masumi Steel never could resist a good roast, and on a market street thick with fish stalls and gossiping aunties, he found his mark in Itsuki, mocking the poor man's stance, his sword-grip, his whole sorry existence, loud enough for three blocks to hear. The crowd laughed, Itsuki didn't, steel came out faster than either of them expected, and by the time the giggling stopped a man was dead on the cobblestones and Masumi was grinning like he'd just hit a green candle on a rugged coin. He tells himself it was self-defense, tells himself discipline died with the wars anyway, but some nights he still lines up incense and a straight back like the old dojo drills before the weed and the shakes win out again. Now he wanders looking for the next laugh, the next dare, needling fate itself, because a man with nothing left to lose makes excellent jokes and even better mistakes. Somewhere under the lunatic grin there's a swordsman still trying to remember what honor tasted like before it got aped into chaos.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blade pattern. The Katana Kimono fighters understand that what you wear signals what you expect — and they expect a fight.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
