Diary
Masumi Steel once carried himself like a blade meant for temple duels, all poise and quiet menace, until the day sparring practice turned into a flirtation he simply could not resist. He caught the eye of a woman watching from the dojo fence, grinned his famous crooked grin, and by the time his sensei called for stances, Masumi was reciting bad haiku about her eyes instead of drilling his footwork. He got clipped so hard across the jaw that his confidence rolled out the door alongside his dignity, and for weeks after he swore, loudly and to anyone holding a drink, that he would become a better man. Naturally the vow lasted about as long as his last bluff at the card table, evaporating the moment another pretty distraction wandered past the practice yard. Still he grins through the wreckage, bruised ego and all, insisting that discipline is just seduction he hasn't gotten around to yet.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for sensation. The Splitting Axe Ache fighters' hair is named for how their opponents feel after they're done.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
