Diary
Masumi Steel used to strip down bare in the Dojo courtyard just to sharpen his blades properly, no sleeve snagging the whetstone, no excuse for a sloppy edge, because back then discipline meant nothing touched his hands but steel and focus. These days the only thing he's stripping is suckers at the felt table in the back room he calls a gambling den, though the health inspector calls it a fire hazard and his mother calls it a disgrace. He still swears he'll get back to basics, swears it every morning through the hangover fog, right before he deals himself a stacked hand and blames the shuffle on bad luck instead of his own thumb. There's a katana mounted above the bar now, dull as his morning resolve, more decoration than discipline, and he grins at customers like the rust on the blade is intentional, some kind of aesthetic choice. Ronin don't retire, he tells anyone who'll listen, they just find new ways to lose everything with style, and Masumi, shirt off, cards in hand, absolutely nothing left to lose, has never looked more committed to a bit in his life.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wealth made garment. The Money Kimono fighters wear their wins literally — the fabric is a record, not a boast.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for an incident. The Sushi Fight fighters have a story about how they got this hairstyle. They don't tell the story. The hair does.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
