Diary
Masumi Steel used to bow before every strike, back when his blade meant something and his mouth meant less; now he just struts through the lobby of Dojo Towers like the floor owes him tribute, hollering obscenities at women who never once agreed to be his audience. He genuinely believed, in that beautiful degenerate way of his, that swagger was a substitute for skill, that a grin and a slur could carry the same weight as a katana drawn clean. It did not, of course, and the ensuing scuffle left him sprawled by the vending machines, dignity rugged harder than his last long position, still cackling through a split lip about how he totally would've won round two. He tells himself, staring up at the fluorescent lights, that tomorrow he'll find that old discipline again, the quiet kind his sensei prized, but tonight he settles for laughing at the ceiling and wondering if the future holds anything sharper for him than another bad bluff and a worse hangover.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The woven face-cover of the wandering monk. The Tengai Basket fighters reveal nothing above the shoulders and everything through how they move.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
