Diary
Masumi Steel used to bow to his superior every morning like clockwork, disciplined as a drawn blade, right up until the day he cracked the man's jaw at the onsen over something so dumb neither of them remembers it now, just steam and screaming and a very wet, very public end to his career. He grins about it these days like it's his origin story, because honestly it kind of is, the moment the samurai part of him got rugged by the degen part waiting underneath the whole time. Now he floats between dive bars and back-alley card games, still trying to run daily drills at dawn, still promising himself just one clean sober week, and still failing by noon every single time, laughing the whole way down. What he wants now, loudly, to anyone who'll listen, is better quality friends, guys who won't bail the second the sake runs out or the cops show up, guys with actual honor instead of vibes. Until he finds them he'll keep needling strangers into brawls just to feel that old onsen electricity again, bluffing his way through a life he definitely did not plan for and somehow still finding it funny.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
They called him Steel because nothing moved him — cold face, cold hands, the last man standing while braver fools lost their nerve. In peacetime, steel with nothing to cut just rusts.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
