Oleg Of War never lost a duel he didn't first lose at dice, and it was in the smoke-choked gambling house of some forgettable backwater that his master plan was born, scrawled on the back of a losing ticket while three men wept over their empty pockets beside him. He tells anyone who'll listen that the experience made him humble, and he says it with the flat, terrifying calm of a man who has never once apologized for anything in his life. Once he wore the discipline of the old dojo like armor, rising before dawn to drill his blade until his arms shook; now he rises whenever the last hand folds and calls that balance. The floor of the gambling house rugged him for everything but his nerve, and somehow he walked out richer in schemes than he ever was in coin, grinning like a man who'd won even while losing.
