Oleg Of War never asks forgiveness because in his ledger there was never a debt to begin with, only yield to be extracted from whoever stood beneath the trees with less than him. The night the poor farmers scattered through the bamboo grove clutching their last coin purses, a stray blade found his chest and took the nipple clean off, a small tax on a large harvest, he'd say, if he ever bothered explaining himself to anyone. He remembers being a samurai once, disciplined, a man who bowed before he struck, but that version of him got rugged by peace itself when the wars dried up and left nothing noble to kill for. Now he floors every temple of ambition he wanders into, half-drunk on rice wine and something greener rolled tight in his sleeve, promising himself tomorrow he'll meditate at dawn like the old masters, and tomorrow never comes because the dream already did.
