Diary
One-Eyed Itsuki once swore an oath of discipline strong enough to cut steel, and he still remembers every syllable of it even as he sits in the men's pleasure house watching Goro make a fool of the concept. His good eye tracks the room twice as sharp as any two-eyed man's, cataloguing every temptation like a general reading a battlefield he has already decided to lose on purpose. Will, he thinks, is just another position you can get rugged out of if you hold it too long, and tonight the floor is soft and the sake is cheap and Goro across the room is laughing like he floored some invisible chart just by existing. Itsuki knows the old masters would call this weakness, but the old masters never had to sit this close to Goro's grin with nothing but a paper fan and a half-empty cup between them and ruin. He exhales smoke that smells suspiciously like weed and victory both, admits to himself that his will did not survive the encounter, and decides, with the calm of a man who has never once won a fight against himself, that he has genuinely never felt better.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
