Diary
One-Eyed Itsuki remembers the palace roof the way other men remember their wedding night, which is to say wrong, in pieces, mostly the parts that hurt. He was leading a ragged crew of bandits across the tiles under a moon that had no business being that bright when the blade went in clean and the man beneath it stopped being a man, and Itsuki's half a world of vision has been split ever since, one eye seeing the roof, the other eye seeing that face. He tried discipline again after, rose at dawn for a week straight, meditated on a floor mat until his knees screamed, then someone rolled up a joint and mentioned a dice game and the mat got used as a coaster instead. He still trains, still sharpens the blade, still bows to the memory of who he was before the rooftop, but mostly he just laughs low and says the view from up there ruined him for anything with a floor. These days he watches the world through his good eye and lets the other one keep the ghost, figuring a man who's already been rugged by his own memory has nothing left up there worth losing.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Traditional footwear made into a statement. The Strap On Geta fighters move in a way that makes noise — deliberate, rhythmic, impossible to miss.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for sensation. The Splitting Axe Ache fighters' hair is named for how their opponents feel after they're done.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
