One-Eyed Itsuki had trained his remaining eye to catch what most men miss with two, so when BBQ Ben slid a baggie of mushrooms across the ribs-stained table on Degens Path, he clocked it before the smoke from the grill even cleared. He told himself this was reconnaissance, a disciplined study of the self, the kind of quiet inward work a masterless samurai owes his own spirit now that there are no wars left to sharpen him. Three bites of brisket and one bad decision later, the mushrooms kicked in and the world did not split into a thousand shimmering truths, it just got a little blurry and mildly annoying, like squinting through fog with his good eye fogged too. Ben waited for a revelation, some cosmic sermon from the one-eyed sage, but Itsuki only shrugged, unbothered as ever, and said the only enlightenment he found was that Ben's barbecue sauce was better than his edibles.
