One eye gone, and still Itsuki claims he sees more than most men with two, the world arriving to him halved but doubled in clarity, like a blade stripped down to its truest edge. Back in the snow country, legend says he took a wandering monkey through the ribs mid tumble with a pack of grieving widows, never breaking rhythm, never losing count of the coins jingling in his sash, because a samurai's focus, he'll tell you, doesn't care what indignity surrounds it. The wars ended, the widows scattered, the monkey presumably filed a complaint with the mountain gods, and Itsuki drifted south into the business of other people's bad luck, running a gambling den so crooked the dice themselves seem embarrassed. He still practices his forms every dawn, one hand steady on the hilt, the other counting the night's rigged winnings, insisting discipline and vice can share a roof if you just don't look at them directly. Ask him about honor and he'll deal you a new hand, smile with the half of his face that still remembers Bushido, and remind you the house always wins, especially when the house used to carry a katana.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
