He does not remember the blade that took his sight so much as the steam rising off that cheap street stall, the oil popping, the last full picture the world ever gave him before it split into two half-truths stitched together by scar tissue. Now he relives it daily, not as trauma but as ritual, chewing the same rubbery cakes from the same rusted cart like a monk repeating a koan he still hasn't solved, half-blind and fully convinced this time he'll taste the lesson instead of just the fish. His discipline these days is mostly theater: he sets a strict two-cakes limit each morning, swears off the sake stand beside it, and by sundown has aped three more skewers and a cup he definitely didn't budget for. Steady as a rock in every duel, he remains hilariously defenseless against a street vendor's smile, and he'll tell you, dry as ever, that losing an eye was the easy part, losing to a fish cake every single day is the real cut that never heals.
