Diary
One-Eyed Itsuki lost half his sight to a war nobody remembers winning, and he decided long ago that the remaining eye would simply work twice as hard, which is why he saw his mistress bolt through the rice paddies before anyone else even noticed she was gone. He gave chase with the calm of a man who once held a line against cavalry, mud sucking at his sandals, robe hiked up like some degenerate heron, muttering that discipline was ninety percent posture and ten percent not falling face first into a paddy. He did fall, twice, and he considered both falls a form of training, the kind his old sensei never had a name for. By the time he caught her at the far dike, lungs burning, dignity rugged beyond recovery, he realized the will he'd been chasing wasn't hers at all, it was his, and it had been hiding in the mud the whole time. He walked home soaked, grinning with the one eye that still worked, telling anyone who'd listen that he'd never felt more like a samurai and less like it, simultaneously, and that suited him just fine.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for the journey, not the destination. The Recovering Alcoholic fighters are in process — and process is honest in a way that arrival never is.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
