One-Eyed Itsuki only needs half his sight to see twice as much as most men, but even he didn't see the mist coming that morning, thick as a bad trade and just as blinding. He'd meant to trim the cherry blossoms with the same discipline he once brought to the blade, one clean cut, no wasted motion, the old samurai way. Instead he came out the other side of that fog with petals in his topknot, sake on his breath, and a vague memory of arguing with a tree about the nature of impermanence. Now he sits before a little Buddha statue every dawn, incense burning, promising himself this is the day he gets his edge back, and every day the incense burns down faster than his resolve. Half the world, twice as clear, he mutters, lighting a joint instead of a candle, and the Buddha, wisely, says nothing back.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for sensation. The Splitting Axe Ache fighters' hair is named for how their opponents feel after they're done.
