One-Eyed Itsuki had trained his remaining eye to catch what two eyes usually missed, but nothing in his years of discipline prepared him for the sight of Raiku rolling weed in the dojo latrines like it was a tea ceremony. They crouched between the stalls, passing the joint back and forth, the ventilation nonexistent and the ceremony sacred in its stupidity, and somewhere in that haze Itsuki's nipples began to bleed, chafed raw against his training gi from laughing too hard at nothing in particular. He remembers thinking, with the clarity only half a face allows, that a true swordsman reads the wind and the blade, not the exact moment his own chest betrays him. The old masters spoke of scars earned in battle, of wounds that told stories of honor, but Itsuki's scars just tell people to never mix cheap fabric with cheaper weed. He has never been the same since, walks a little stiffer, laughs a little quieter, and still eyes every latrine in every dojo with the wary respect of a man who survived something he can't quite explain to the new recruits.
Heavy. Deliberate. The Gold Earring fighters wear their conviction in precious metal on the outside so everyone knows before they speak.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.

'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
