Oleg does not remember the wound as pain. He remembers it as a data point: at Kiyomizu-Dera, mid-strike, fist already committed to Botan's jaw, a blade found the gap in his ribs and he catalogued the angle of entry before he catalogued the blood. He finished the knockout anyway, because a technique interrupted is a technique dishonored, and Oleg has never once in his life understood that this is not normal. Seven nights now he has sat upright on his mat, wound stitched crooked by his own hand, insisting that sleep is a discipline he will master through sheer refusal to need it, the way he once mastered the sword. The old masters would have called this focus; the dojo calls it Tuesday, and pours him another drink he does not want and will not admit, gravely, that he needs.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.

Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
