Diary
Oleg climbed the thousand vermillion gates of Fushimi at dawn, alone, having told no one because no one at the dojo could be trusted to take a pilgrimage seriously, and he meant to speak with The Old Dragon the way his sword-masters once spoke to the mountain itself, in silence and in truth. The Old Dragon, when it finally deigned to answer, spoke of impermanence and the folly of attachment, and Oleg listened with his jaw clenched, waiting for the part that would rearrange his bones, but it never came. He found the whole exchange uninspiring, frankly beneath a being of such supposed weight, and said so aloud to the empty shrine, which did not improve his reputation among the fox statues. He had come seeking discipline restored, some ancient rite to burn the vice out of him, and instead received vague riddles he could have gotten cheaper from Wandering Kenji after his third bowl of grass. Walking back down through the gates he vowed, again, to quit drinking by the new moon, a vow already cracking before he reached the bottom step, and he logged the whole pilgrimage in his ledger under failures, right next to the others, because at least a ledger never lied to him about being profound.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Nothing hidden. No armor above the neck. The Bald fighters face everything without cover and consider this the only honest approach.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
