Diary
In Okinawa, Serious Oleg irons his kimono the way other men pray: spine straight, jaw locked, iron held like a blade because to him it is a blade, ironing is combat, wrinkles are enemies of the old bushido he still bleeds for. A monkey darts across the veranda mid-stroke, Oleg's wrist commits before his mind does, and steel finds fur before he can call it back. He has replayed the motion ten thousand times since, certain a true samurai would have pulled the strike, certain discipline is a muscle he let atrophy somewhere between the last war and the first bad hand of blackjack. The dojo calls it an accident, offers him a joint to loosen the guilt knotted in his shoulders, and Oleg accepts it with the same funeral gravity he brings to everything, inhaling like it's a penance rather than a party. Every morning since, he re-irons that same kimono at dawn, silent, unsmiling, still trying and still failing to earn back the calm he lost in one careless heartbeat.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
