Diary
Botan walked into the Meiji Jungle wearing another man's name like a borrowed haori, figuring fear was a tax he'd never paid and never would, so why start now. The mark he was aping around town made him for a fraud somewhere around the third lie, and the men who corrected him did it with fists, taking four teeth as collateral damage and leaving zero apologies on either side. He spat blood into the underbrush, counted the gaps with his tongue like a monk counting prayer beads, and said only, calm as a still pond, that it was a fair price for a bad trade. Back at the dojo he swore this was the week he'd finally rebuild the old discipline, cold baths, dawn forms, no weed before noon, and by sundown he was gumming a joint through the new hole in his smile, laughing like the universe had told the funniest joke it knew. He is recovering slowly, teeth first, fear never, and if you ask him whether it was worth it he'll grin that ruined grin and tell you the jungle rugged him fair and square.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Excess made armor. The Glutton Fight fighters wear their hunger on the outside — not for food, but for everything the Dojo offers.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
