Diary
At the noodle house in Kyotoshi, Shitless Botan leaned across the broth-steamed table and told his oldest friend a truth that should have cost him his throat, then ordered another bowl like he hadn't just held a blade to a decade of loyalty. Death pulled up a stool beside him that night, close enough to share the chopsticks, and Botan only shrugged and asked if it wanted the last gyoza. Once he'd been a samurai who bowed before every strike, disciplined down to the breath, but the wars ended and left him holding nothing but nerve and a taste for chaos he never learned to put down. Now he's aped into the jungle outside Nara, telling himself it's meditation and detox, though the only ritual he's kept is rolling something green at dawn and calling it discipline because the sun rose and he technically noticed. The birds don't ask him to feel guilty, which is the whole appeal, and somewhere back in that noodle house steam a friendship sits rugged, unclaimed, and getting cold.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
