At the Edo palace, arrows still humming in the air like drunk bees, Shitless Botan noticed a bandit's satchel spilling a fat baggie of mushrooms across the stone steps and simply decided that mattered more than the blade aimed at his throat. He caught the sword arm with one hand, pocketed the shrooms with the other, and kept walking through the melee like a man collecting rent, utterly unbothered that half the courtyard wanted him dead. When the dust settled the Dojo elders found him sitting cross-legged among the bodies, calmly sorting caps from stems, and something about that terrifying stillness earned him a respect no discipline lecture ever could. He still tells himself he'll save the mushrooms for a proper ceremonial fast, some quiet return to samurai restraint, but by nightfall they're already gone, eaten raw off his palm like trail mix. Fear left him on an operating table years ago and never came back for its things, so now the only battle Botan consistently loses is the one against his own snack instincts.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
