Rin used to sleep with one eye open, blade within reach, ready for an ambush that never came after the wars ended, and now that vigilance has nowhere to go except into wildly unnecessary places, like the Dojo hot springs where he swore he spotted his mistress's silk robe vanishing behind a bamboo screen. He gave chase in nothing but a towel and forty years of pent-up readiness, vaulting benches, scattering elderly bathers, convinced this was the ambush he'd trained for his whole life, only to slip on wet stone and crash straight through the paper wall of his own employer's private soak. He was fired before the steam even cleared, escorted out still dripping, his severance handed to him folded like a battle report he refused to read twice.
