Diary
Rin packed seventeen contingency items for a day hike up Mount Hotaka, including a second compass in case the first compass developed opinions, and still nearly had a heart attack when a stranger fell into step beside him and started flirting on the exposed ridgeline where one wrong word could apparently cause an avalanche. He had trained for ambushes, for blades, for the screaming chaos of real war, and none of it prepared him for someone complimenting his calves while his knees buckled with a different kind of panic entirely. Somehow the encounter went well enough that his status among the other degens ticked upward, which only confirmed his suspicion that the universe rewards people who are visibly falling apart in real time. Riding that momentum, Rin has now decided to teach a class on discipline and preparedness to a group of degens who show up to spar hungover, half-baked, and asking if the dojo takes crypto for the entry fee. He has already drawn up a seventeen-page syllabus, a laminated emergency contact sheet, and a backup instructor in case he personally has a breakdown mid-lecture, which, given his track record on that mountain, feels less like caution and more like prophecy.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
The disguise is the identity. The Degen Superhero glasses fighters have a secret — or maybe the secret is that there's no secret and they've always been exactly this.
After. The Messy fighters' hair tells you what happened — not what they planned, but what they went through.
Games within games. The Chō-Han Gambling Dice fighters turned the casino into the armory and find this philosophically consistent.
