Stresshead Rin had trained for ambushes, poison, betrayal, the works, drilling katas for threats that never arrived once the wars quietly rugged everyone's purpose, yet nothing in his sixteen years of vigilance prepared him for the true final boss: laughing too hard at one of Haru's jokes on a crowded street corner. He'd catalogued every worst-case scenario a man could ape into, bandits, curses, bad sake, but never once drilled for the possibility that his own finger might snap simply from doubling over near a food stall, and the betrayal of his own body stung worse than any blade ever could. Now he sits with it wrapped and throbbing, replaying the moment on loop like a chart he should've sold, muttering that if he'd just kept his discipline, kept his guard up even during a joke about Haru's terrible sake breath, this never would have happened. He tells himself tomorrow he starts stretching every morning, meditating, eating clean, becoming the disciplined blade he once was, but tonight he's icing his hand with a beer in the other, already catastrophizing about what disaster awaits him next, maybe blinking too hard, maybe breathing wrong. Somewhere beneath the bandage and the paranoia is a former samurai who genuinely misses having a real fight worth his focus, instead of losing this one to his own laughter.”
