Rin had rehearsed forty-three scenarios of ambush before ever sitting down at the noodle house in Ise, checked the exits twice, palmed the hilt of a blade he technically pawned last spring, and still got clipped clean on his one soft spot: his mouth. Mid-slurp, mid-gossip about some rival dojo's floor price and whose sensei got rugged by his own council, a hand slid past his shoulder and lifted the earring right off him, gone before the broth even cooled. He spent the next hour spiraling, certain it was a coordinated hit, an omen, possibly the start of a curse arc, when in truth it was just a bored teenager with quick fingers and no interest in his conspiracy theories. Now he says he wants a quieter life, journals about it, buys little candles for it, then immediately maps out fourteen new ways someone could betray him at the next bowl of udon. Discipline, for Rin, is a dojo he keeps rebuilding in his head every night and abandoning again every morning before breakfast.'
