Rin arrived at the yakiniku forty minutes early with a laminated checklist, a spare pair of tongs, and a contingency plan for the contingency plan, certain that tonight he would finally out-grill his old master and reclaim some sliver of the discipline the wars took from him. He convinced himself the marbled wagyu was merely another battlefield, flipped it a beat too soon, scorched the edges black, and in his panic knocked the good binchotan coals clean off the grate and onto his master's sandal, an act of sabotage he swears to this day was an accident of pure vigilance rather than pure incompetence. His master only laughed, shook ash from his foot, and told him some fires you cannot out-discipline, you can only survive them with better tongs, which did nothing to calm the anxious hum still buzzing in Rin's chest with nowhere honorable left to go. Now he sits across from him afterward, smoke still curling off his ruined skirt steak, asking in dead seriousness what a man is supposed to do with a lifetime of readiness and no war, no dojo, no floor left to defend. His master just refills both their cups of shochu and says the real answer probably involves therapy, weed, or a very patient friend, and Rin, notebook already out, starts drafting a five-step plan to become the kind of man who no longer needs a five-step plan.
