Diary
Rin had come to the Dojo armed with three contingency plans and a laminated checklist, because that is simply what one does before speaking with The Degen Scholar, a man who once quoted seventeen sutras while doing a keg stand. Somewhere between the Scholar's fourth toast and his lecture on the impermanence of floor prices, Rin's vigilance, the last true soldier standing guard over his liver, quietly deserted its post and got hammered right alongside him. He woke the next morning on the dojo steps with sake-breath, a half-formed thesis scrawled on his forearm, and the sudden, terrifying conviction that he must now write a book, something scholarly, disciplined, structured with the precision his old katas used to have. He has already drafted an outline, a bibliography, and four increasingly unhinged apology letters to his own liver, though not a single actual sentence of the manuscript exists. Somewhere his old sensei is sighing, watching a man built for battlefield readiness prepare instead for a war against his own hangover and a book titled, tentatively,
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No fixed allegiance. The Mercenary fighters fight for whoever offers the right terms and have never lost a battle when those terms were met.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Floor-mat helmet. The Tatami Kabuto fighters made armor from the training floor itself — they carry the place they trained in wherever they go.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
