Then the gambling house dared him into the snake bath as a joke on a slow Tuesday, and somewhere between the third serpent curling round his ankle and the dealer laughing at his scream, the old certainty died and something twitchier crawled into its place. Now he wakes at four hours by accident, heart already sprinting, cataloguing every possible disaster before his tea is cool enough to drink, and he has funneled all that leftover samurai vigilance into writing the Degen Handbook, seventeen chapters on how to lose money responsibly that nobody responsible would ever read. He drafts rules for others he cannot keep himself, a curfew he breaks by page three, a vow of sobriety annotated in the margins with exactly which izakaya has the good plum wine. Some nights he still feels a phantom snake brush his ankle under the table, and he tells himself it's just nerves, then adds another chapter on staying calm, in handwriting that shakes the whole way down.
