Now, coin-less and newly bonded to men who consider a floor price a form of destiny, he has resolved to drink away the shame of enjoying himself, drafting a strict one-cup discipline in his head even as he orders the third round. He keeps insisting this is a controlled retreat, a tactical sorrow-drowning with clear rules of engagement, while his hands already know there are no rules tonight. Somewhere in the ache beneath the sake, the old sentinel in him mourns a war that ended without him, replaced now by bamboo, bad advice, and the losing battle to keep his own guard up against his own good time.
