Diary
Rin had trained for ambushes, poison, betrayal at dawn, seventeen different exit routes from any teahouse he ever sat in, yet nothing in his old scrolls prepared him for the indignity of losing a bet at the fish market by pretending to be a man named Goro who apparently owed money to three separate mackerel vendors. He'd rehearsed the disguise obsessively the night before, cross-referencing Goro's supposed walk, cough, and haggling cadence like it was a covert op instead of a dumb dare from the other degens, because vigilance doesn't know how to power down even when the mission is this stupid. The bet went sideways the second the real Goro showed up, furious, smelling of low tide and betrayal, and Rin's carefully engineered cover collapsed into apologies, a fistful of yen he didn't have, and the specific horror of being escorted out past rows of judging tuna eyes. Now he stands off to the side of the dojo courtyard, arms crossed, replaying it on a loop, insisting he could have won if he'd just packed one more contingency plan, maybe two, definitely a fake mustache. He tells everyone he's fine, he's disciplined, he's basically a monk about it, then spends the rest of the afternoon anxiously restocking his emergency snack bag in case the fish market situation somehow escalates into a rematch he absolutely did not agree to.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The name is the lore. The Poop Pride Kimono fighters have transcended embarrassment so completely that they wear the proof. Undefeated.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Organization meets chaos. The Yakuza Hooligan fighters have discipline from one tradition and abandon from another, and they've combined them into something entirely their own.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
