Rin arrived at the sakura grove forty minutes early, as always, because arriving on time is how empires fall and he had drawn up seventeen contingency plans for a simple prayer. He knelt beneath the blossoms, breathing in the disciplined four-count he'd read about in a scroll he definitely skimmed, and began his petition to whatever gods still answered degenerate ronin who ape into candles at 3am. Somewhere between bowing and reciting he felt a strange lightness, a draft where there used to be a topknot, and by the time he looked up half his hair was drifting away on the wind like a rugged position he never saw coming.
